changes of the ordinary people's life which affected the houses they live in today.

i'm studying architecture and i'm writing an essay on vernacular architecture and in one of the questions i am asked is; how our homes change/ affected as our lives change. in terms of becoming more modernized.
if some people could give me some examples i would very much appreciate it. its all research am doing at the moment.I am writing an essay on how people houses change as our life change. few volunteers please?
so what you mean is as the houses became more modernised the people inside them where affected???
If that is the same line of thought you require, my mum [not that old] can recall it was her job to blacken the doorstep every week, empty out the fire place daily and either hand wash the family wash or take it down to the local laundry..........
Basically as thing became easier / more streamlined then it would stand to reason that peoples lives within the houses would get easier, yet from what I see people spend less and less time in their homes than ever before.
