It's silly, I agree, especially for things that are better left to professionals - like medical advice, legal advice, etc. But I think it's a form of reaching out to a community. When you ask friends for advice or opinions, they may not be the most knowledgeable of people, but it helps to get different opinions and makes you think a little. It's also interesting because you get such a wide range of opinions, not necessarily only those of the groups you might associate with.
