When you change your appearance on second life do people see you?

If I'm in a public place, do people see what I'm doing when I'm changing my appearance? When you change your appearance on second life do people see you?
This is interesting because Linden Labs changed this. I remember when I was new in SL and someone was trying to show me how to make my avatar more realistic. She would give me suggestions and I would try them and then have to save and come out of change appearance so she could see the results.

From the 1.19 version of the client software, that changed and now you can see all the changes people make while they are still in Change Appearance mode.

I'm going to go slightly off-topic and give you a few tips (seeing as we're discussing how other people see you when you are fixing things in SL).

Most new residents in SL are under the impression that to change clothes, you have to take the old clothes off first - thus leaving your avatar naked while you ferret around in your inventory looking for the clothes you want to wear. Not so. You can wear new clothes without having to remove the old ones by just wearing the new items from your inventory. This replaces any clothes you are wearing in that current location. So lets say you are wearing some crappy pants and a top you got in a freebie store and you have arrived at a formal dance hall with a dress code. You open your inventory and locate the folder with your favourite ballgown. Chances are high that it will have some pants that go with it to stop the appearance of bare legs poking through the prims. Click on the ballroom gown pants and 'wear'. SL will automatically replace your old pants with the gown pants. Same thing with the top. The only thing you have to consider is what layer an item is designated as. It could be that the top you had on was allocated to the shirt layer of your clothes and the top for the gown is designated as a jacket layer, so now you have two tops on - the ballroom gown top over the tee shirt you had on with the pants. In this case, right click on your avatar and chose the option to Take Off %26gt; Clothes %26gt; Shirt. You do this with any clothing layer from the previous outfit that is still there.

Your gown will have at least one prim attachment - usually the flowing skirt section. These are not exactly clothes in the normal sense. Attachments fit to key body locations, so a skirt attachment can be attatched to the pelvis or the stomach. That's why if you wear a prim belt it can still be there when you add a skirt prim because each is on a different location prim location. You just need to look at your avatar to see what he/she still has on from the old outfit and remove it. Prims are easier to remove as you right click on the actual prim and select 'Detach'.

If you can't see your avatar properly, try holding down Ctrl and Alt, left click on yourself with the mouse and hold that button. Now, while holding keys and mouse button, move the mouse from side to side to move around your avatar. Let go of just Ctrl and you can zoom in by moving the mouse up and down.

Finally, if your clothes aren't changing, or you are very blurry, try pressing Ctrl, Alt and R together once and that re-downloads your current body textures from the SL database. This is commonly called rebaking.

All of these things are useful when changing clothes - especially in a public area.
