As far as the question is concerned, I think lies are horribly destructive things. Everyone knows of the 'lie upon the lie upon the lie' to cover your own ***. After a while that ceases and you just forget why you ever thought you were lying - it's become reality!
That's how lies can change people's lives. What we 'are' is ultimately a construction - our self-image, our personality etcetc - and lies are a paradoxically subversive (in the sense that you control them, but you don't) construction. If you're not in control of your own construction because of lies, then you are in an extremely vulnerable position.
